Valentine’s Day Edition: Why We Love King Salmon and Other Hot Topics
February 14, 2018In the spirit of National Heart Month, we’ve put together a collection of things we love in this Valentine’s Day edition of the Chinook Shores Lodge newsletter.
February is Heart Month
Did you know, fish is a good source of protein and, unlike fatty meat products, it’s not high in saturated fat. Fish is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), which can lead to sudden death. Source: American Heart Association.
By the way, walking is one of the easiest ways to increase your physical activity and improve your health. Physical activity increases your heart rate, strengthens your heart, and increases blood circulation through your body, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your organs. Source: WebMD
So…. Take a Stroll Along Ketchikan’s Creek Street
Visited by thousands of visitors every year, historic Creek Street is a popular shopping destination in Ketchikan. If you happen to be in Ketchikan on Valentine’s Day, take your sweetie on a stroll along the boardwalk and browse these great shops:
The Captain’s Lady Boutique and Gifts: A little bitty boutique nestled by the creek in Ketchikan, Alaska! We feature a collection of colorful & classy items to dazzle seafarers & landlubbers!
Ketchikan Candle Company: This beautiful brand is hand poured by Jaimie and Jason Palmer in their home, and partners with local businesses: Yelloow Art for graphic design and Pacific Printing for labels. You may have seen these at Nadra’s Tackle & Teez last summer, co-branded for Chinook Shores Lodge.
Soho Coho Art Gallery: A collection of t-shirts, sweatshirts and artwork by the legendary Ray Troll, as well as, fun artwork and jewelry designed by other local artists.
Cook a Heart-Healthy Salmon Meal
If you’re cooking dinner for your sweetie, try this amazing salmon steak with orange-avocado salad recipe (photo courtesy of ASMI). You can enjoy a restaurant-quality, meal in the comfort of your own home. If you’re saving up for your next Alaska fishing trip, cooking at home is less expensive, but we also think salmon and the food you cook at home is healthier and tastier.
Ask our dockhands to butterfly a couple salmon steaks for you when you’re at the lodge. Watch (below) McKinley demonstrate fish filleting (with a very dull knife).
Speaking of Sweet Treats…
Have you sampled the hand-crafted chocolates at KetchiCandies? We highly recommend! Candy orders can be placed online and picked up at their Ward Cove store Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Not local? No problem. Call (907) 225-0900 to place a custom order with shipping.
Last year we offered chocolate truffles, hand-dipped peppermint patties and chocolate covered Oreo and Nutter Butter cookies, and you’ll find a large variety of sweet treats at KetchiCandies online store.
Go on a Date — We’re Sweet On Fishing
Our Ketchikan, Alaska sport fishing packages include lodging in a private beach house and use of our aluminum 23′ boats that are ready to fish!
